- Lost in thought
STATEMENT OF WORK:
Day By Day, is just that, a series of work that releases my thoughts of that particular day. My work is rooted in one of two sources, faith or state of mind – things I struggle with. In the beginning, I try to translate an aspect of faith or an intangible emotion to canvass. It’s harder to achieve in paint than I thought…I merely strive for it. And concept usually serves as a departure point because the physicality of painting takes over. I get lost in the process and my approach moves from cerebral to intuitive. I love color and the sheer energy required in my approach. I get excited about fresh mark making and unexpected results, so in a way, this series is about giving up control with that oh so difficult balance of guiding at given moments. As for the specifics of each painting, I think it’d be best for you to take what you perceive from my art rather than let the details of my experiences influence you. Enjoy, Day by Day.
Day by Day
By Jenny Crone
BIO:
San Antonio artist Jenny Crone has had an interest in art since she was a little girl, starting from making
collages on the bathroom floor and colors dangle from her bedroom ceiling to taking private art classes at her mother’s friend’s studio at age 9. At that young age, she would be painting in the studio long after everyone else had left, completely absorbed in creating.
In her early teens through college, her interest veered toward photography which tuned her eye to light and composition. While taking Art History classes in which she earned a degree at Southern Methodist University, she privately dreamed of painting. She finally took the plunge for that dream in spring 2000 when she dropped her dot com day job in San Francisco to explore painting full time. She studied at City College of San Francisco, San Francisco Art Institute, and California College of the Arts between jobs. Now, when she’s not selling real estate at Phyllis Browning Company, you may find her painting at Salon Mijangos.

Title of series: Figurative Translation
Artist's Statement:
By Jenny Crone
My work is driven from emotional spaces. For me, charcoal on paper is
the most immediate way to transfer my emotion and gut response to what
I’m seeing and feeling. A person carries a certain energy. My figure
drawings have a rawness that interprets the figure’s energy which is
filtered through my own frame of mind. If you observe a figure drawing
class, no two drawings are the same; they are wildly different in
tempo, tone, atmosphere and style. Line carries energy and excitement
or languor. My physical approach to drawing shows my preference for a
dynamic, spontaneous line to an exact, measured one. Music also
influences the liveliness of my work. My goal is to capture a moment of
energy and translate it to paper. |
