Maricela Sanchez Biography
Born in Laredo, Texas and raised in Highland Park, Illinois, Maricela Sanchez (Marcy Hunter, Marcy Rodriguez) started her creative skills as a youth and began focusing her art talent in high school, where she received numerous awards. She moved to Corpus Christi in 1982 and studied art at Del Mar College, Corpus Christi State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Texas A & M University – Corpus Christi. Medium: Oils and Acrylics and Mixed Media Style: Collage, Abstract Expressionism Artist Statement I continuously challenge myself, my art, my way of thinking. I'm never settled. My 2007 work is always branded with my ‘Maricela Sanchez’ label, newspaper articles and other materials, each buried beneath the surface and peeking through the layers of paints. I take simplicity, then quickly make it complex, to the point that you can't find resolve - lost, undefined, unsettled. This allows me to challenge myself to create a foundation, which becomes redefined. My work is about branding a label and using words, materials, colors, layering and complexity, coming together to make images that influence and define our society today. More on Maricela Sanchez Maricela was a recipient of the 1996 New Texas Talent Show, juried by Patricia Meadows in Dallas. She was also one of several original artists working at K-Space in Corpus Christi from 1995 to 2000. From 1999 to 2002, Maricela conducted two artists in residency programs at Coronado Studio in Austin and became active in the San Antonio art community. During these years, she and Patricia Ruiz-Healy founded Arteprenuers for the San Antonio Museum of Art. She has helped raise funds for various Corpus Christi organizations. She chaired the James Surls and Charmaine Locke retrospective at the Art Center of Corpus Christi in 1993, co-chaired Arte Picante, bringing Master Chef Patricia Quintana of Mexico in 2004, raising funds for the Art Museum of South Texas (AMST), co-chaired the Members’ Grand Opening of the Ricardo Legorreta designed William B. and Maureen Miller Building at the AMST in 2006 (introducing Ray Smith to Corpus Christi,). Also, in the late 80’s, early 90’s, she brought Master Chef Jaques Pepin, Linda Wortheimer and Bob Edwards (National Public Radio) to raise funds for Public Broadcasting. In 1994-95, she helped bring pieces from the rare Absolut Vodka Art Collection for the American Heart Association’s (AHA) fund raiser. Maricela currently serves actively on the Board of Governors for the AMST and works for the AHA.
